It was model mayhem during lunch hour on Lambton Quay when 34 photographers and models took to the streets for Wellington Fashion Week's 'Photographers Exposed' competition.
Models posed on street art in their stilettos, climbed lampposts, strutted across pedestrian crossings and posed on the Quay's median strip, in many cases stopping traffic and curious passers-by.
Photographers had two hours to get a shot that defined Wellington fashion, said Fashion Week organiser Cameron Sneddon.
Margaret Beesley, 87, of Tawa, approved of the outfits of models Bronte Chadwick and Jazz Rowland who were photographed by Mark Fa'amaoni of Big Mark Photography.
"I think it's lovely what the young people wear today. I like the model in the filmy white dress and black boots. When I was that age it would be considered absolutely mad but it's lovely to see how they can carry it off," Ms Beesley said.
Mr Fa'amaoni aka "Big Mark" said he heard about the competition from a friend. Originally he planned to try and stop a few cars but that turned out to be a bit dangerous.
"I wanted to provide the juxtaposition of the models and people walking by, but that didn't really work out so I'm currently trying to decide on whether I go for a quieter more intimate look or a wider shot that captures Wellington city," he said.
Christchurch-based German model and student Johanna Schacht said she didn't mind climbing a pole and balancing precariously while holding an umbrella for photographer Anna Jamieson. Schacht is one of the models who has flown in especially for Wellington Fashion Week and will be walking in shows later this week.
Photographer Anna Jamieson said she wanted to bring the wind into her composition.
"My interpretation of Wellington fashion is really quirky and colourful and that you can get away with anything and obviously the wind, which is why the umbrella is inside out."
The deadline for entrants to submit their final photograph is 5pm today. The winner will receive a new Nikon 1 J1 camera.
The images will be judged by Wellington Fashion Week official photographer Tim Watson and the winner announced on Friday.
